Human Rights Day 10th December

5 Dec

A selection of some of the books we are donating to Taunton Library.

To mark Human Rights Day on Saturday 10th December, the Taunton Amnesty Group is donating a range of books on human rights and related topics to Taunton Library. There will be a display of some of these books in the library from 10th December – do go along and borrow one of these thought-provoking titles to show that Taunton cares about human rights!

Also on Saturday 10th December we will be holding a Write for Rights event from 10am to 2pm in St Mary Magdalene Church, Taunton. We’ll be writing greetings cards containing messages of support to prisoners of conscience across the world. Please come along and sign a card, which could help to change a life. Tea, coffee and refreshments available at the church coffee shop. We hope to see you there!

Please note: we are not holding our usual monthly meeting on Tuesday 13th December.

Save the date! Taunton Amnesty stall Saturday 16th July

6 Jun

On Saturday 16th July we will be holding a stall event from 10am until 2.30pm at Castle Green in the centre of Taunton. We are aiming to raise awareness about one of Amnesty’s key campaigns on Women’s Rights, focusing on Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone where discriminatory attitudes and high costs create barriers to women accessing contraception and sexual and reproductive services and information.

From 18 April to 18 July this year, the Department for International Development will be doubling any money raised by Amnesty to support a project to prevent cases of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Early Forced Marriage (EFM) in Burkino Faso and Sierra Leone.

Please come along to make a donation (which will be doubled by the UK government) and sign our petition calling on Burkino Faso’s government to protect girls and young women from forced marriages.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Palestine: What Hope Peace – documentary film screening in Taunton

11 Feb

poster-with-text-2bKerry-anne Mendoza is an independent journalist who has been championing the Palestinian cause since her first visit to Israel and Palestine when she was a young student in 2002 and has made several visits since then, most recently during the height of Operation Protective Edge in August 2014.
She has now made a documentary film showing the side of the story that our mainstream media does not acknowledge. It features eye opening and heart breaking first-hand testimonies from Israelis and Palestinians working against the odds for a just peace in the Middle East as well as archive footage and Kerry-anne’s own eyewitness experience during her visit last summer.  Also some startling historical background and several testimonies from the Russell Tribunal.

This is being shown at the Creative Innovation Centre in Taunton on Friday 13 March.  Bar from 7.00pm for 7.30pm start.

Kerry-anne will be at the screening and there will be a Question and Answer session at the end.

Here is a link to the event on the CIC website which gives further information about the film, the venue and ticket booking etc.
